The Science of Toning (in Salon Training)

Course summary

The Science of Toning training focuses on building confidence and precision in hair toning through both theory and hands-on practice. You’ll learn how to conduct in-depth consultations, manage client expectations, and clearly explain the purpose of toners. The course covers colour theory (colour wheel/star), recognising underlying pigments at different lift levels, understanding tonal numbering systems, and formulating toners based on lift rather than relying on a “go-to” formula. You’ll also learn how to prevent patchy toners, revisit the bleaching curve, improvise mixes (such as when violet runs out), and understand the differences between colour melt, root tap, and root smudge techniques. This guide breaks down how a colour remover works, and when you can use them, through real life client scenarios.

You will see a few different scenarios that you may see in the salon and how i transformed them to lighter colours with bleach not being the first step. Overall, the focus is on building confidence, improving results, and expanding high-value colour services through better understanding and education.
